この表現は、個人的な希望を言う時に使います。例えば、２つの選択肢がある時にどちらかと言うと、AよりもBの方がいいというニュアンスです。

“I’d rather not…” = “I don’t want to…”

I’d rather not do ~

I’d rather not (do something)は、（何かを）したくないという意味ですが、この場合、ただ何かをしたくないのではなく、する必要があることに対して「むしろ、やりたくない」と言う時に使います。

あなたの機嫌が悪い時、誰かが「どうしたの？」と聞いてきました。あなたはこんな風に答えることが出来ます。

I’d rather not talk about it.
話したくないです。

I’d rather not.
後に文を続けず、I’d rather not だけでも使えます。

友人同士が街でクラブ遊びをしています

A: It’s getting late. What time is the last train?
B: I want to keep drinking. Let’s stay out all night, man.

B: Come on, man!
A: I really don’t want. I’ve got things to do tomorrow.
B: You’re a real party pooper, you know that!?

Party pooper -a person who throws gloom over social enjoyment.

A: もう遅くなってきたよ。最終電車って何時？
B: 俺もっと飲みたいよ。朝までいようぜ。
A: 俺はやめておくよ。
B: そんなこと言わずにさぁ。
A: マジ嫌だから。明日やることあるし。
B: お前って、本当にノリの悪い奴だな、わかってんのか!?
