省略した形は、カレンダーやダイアリーでよく使われますので見慣れていると思います。注意する点は、火曜と木曜。文字スペースの都合で、略し方がさらに短くなったりします。またこの2つは似ているので、見間違いにも注意ですね。

月曜から金曜日までを weekdays、土曜、日曜日を weekend と言います。

Days of the week と weekdays は同じ意味ではないことに注意しましょう。

The days of the week (曜日)は、月曜から日曜までの7曜日のこと。
Weekdays (平日)は、月曜から金曜までの5日間のこと。
The weekend(週末) は、土曜と日曜のこと。

A Workday —就業日、仕事日、働く日、出勤する日
e.g. Next Monday is a public holiday, but Tuesday will be a normal workday.
次の月曜日は祝日ですが、火曜日は通常の就業日です。

e.g. Saturday and Sunday are normal workdays for policemen.
土日は警察官にとっては通常の就業日です。

Day off — 仕事や学校が休みの日、

Rostered days off (RDO)

オーストラリでは、消化しなければならない休暇を Rostered days off (RDO) と言います。基準労働時間の帳尻を合わせる為に、その月に多く働いた分を休みにしてもらえる制度です。有給か無給かは、契約の内容によります。

オーストラリアではメルボルンカップと呼ばれるとても有名な競馬があります。毎年11月の第一火曜日に開催され、開催地のあるヴィクトリア州では祝日となっています。多くの人は前日の月曜日にもお休みを取り、4連休の長い週末を楽しみます。

Next Monday is a public holiday, so it will be a long weekend.
次の月曜日は祝日だから、長い週末になるね。

 

What is the first day of the week? 一週間の始まりは何曜日から?

ほとんどの欧米人にとって、一週間の始まりは月曜日です。
土曜と日曜は「週末」といわれ、日曜日は週の終わりです。ということは、月曜日から1週間がはじまるということです。

また、多くの人にとって日曜日は仕事が休みで、月曜日が週の働き初めの日となるので、月曜が週の初めになります。

聖書では、安息日は週の終わりに休む日のことで、宗派により違いはありますが、土曜か日曜がその日になります。

 

Every Monday or Mondays

毎週同じ曜日にする習慣や決まり事を話す時は、次の2通りの言い方ができます。

1 every + 曜日

2 on + 曜日 + s

どちらも「毎週◯曜日」という意味です。2は曜日の後に複数形のSを付けることで、繰り返しを表していますので、曜日にSを忘れないようにして下さい。

I train on Mondays and Wednesdays.
僕は毎週月曜と水曜に練習しています。

My soccer game is held every Sunday.
サッカーの試合は毎週日曜日にあります。

Every Saturday I visit my grandmother.
毎週土曜日におばあちゃんの家へ行きます。

毎週金曜日は、会社を早めに出ます。
